After releasing the vinyl-only LP The Town in 2015, The Exuberance Phase: Selected Modular Works is the newest album from ex Coctails band member Barry Phipps, and is the first of his music to be released to all major music streaming platforms.

Inspired by Barry’s long fascination with early electronic music pioneers such as Raymond Scott, Roedelius, Neu!, Brian Eno and others, as well as newer innovators like Sam Prekop and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, the album was composed entirely on a modular synthesizer. Without the use of a traditional keyboard, the music was made through patching, programming… and lots of knob turning. This process lead Barry, a musician who has made music for over 35 years, to create music in a new and exciting way.

As Barry states in the liner notes: “The Exuberance Phase is a collection of music I made while learning how to use a modular synthesizer. I began buying modules one at a time until I learned how to use them. I recorded stuff as I went along. Over time, I became more confident and proficient. Later, I went through these early recordings and had no memory of how I made them. My later works didn’t have this same feeling of exuberance. These became my favorite recordings. It’s the only music I’ve ever made that I can listen to without hearing me in the music. These are my favorite selections from over three hours of recorded compositions.”

The Exuberance Phase is available through Tight Ship Records, a label he founded in 2004 to release small run recordings of his favorite artists.
